Japan’s oldest Catholic Church stands tests of time
The Sacred Heart Cathedral in Yamate of Yokohama is the oldest Catholic Church built in 1862 by missionaries from Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP), shortly after the Buddhist-majority nation lifted a ban on preaching of Christianity. The first church was constructed in a different spot but was moved to the current location in 1906. The church was completely devasted in the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923. Czech architect Jan Josef Svagr designed the present church in Neo-Gothic style, and it was completed in 1933.
Vietnam’s wooden cathedral enlivens the dream of French missionary
Kon Tum wooden Cathedral church in Vietnam’s Central Highlands is a rare architectural splendor. Built in between 1913 to 1918 from expensive ironwood and rosewood and without any nails, the church stands on 100 pillars. The cathedral is one of the oldest churches in the Central Highlands that survived many natural disasters and wars largely unharmed. The church is a confluence of Roman architecture and traditional stilt house style of ethnic Ba Na people.
Vietnamese cathedral offered sanctuary to slain president
St. Francis Xavier Church in the China town of former Vietnamese capital Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) lives the memory of Father Pierre D’Assou (Cha Tam in Vietnamese), a priest from China’s Macau Island who played a pivotal role in construction of the first church for local Chinese Catholics in 1900-1902. Today, the church is mostly known as Cha Tam Church in an honor to contributions of the missionary priest. Vietnamese priest and architect Father John Baptist Huynh Tinh Huong designed the church complex that accommodates the church building, large compound, a house of charity, houses for rent, a kindergarten, a community house, a school, and a meeting hall.
