Bishop Cosmas Hoang Van Dat, S.J. was born on July 20, 1947 in Bac Ninh province. He entered Jesuits in 1968 and studied philosophy and theology at the Pius X Pontifical College in Da Lat before he was ordained a priest on June 5, 1976. He took his final vow in 1982. Bishop Dat was in charge of religious formation for young Jesuits, provided pastoral activities for a parish and leprosariums. After furthering his studies in France, Bishop Dat worked as a spiritual director at Ha Noi-based Saint Joseph Major Seminary in 2005-2008. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Bac Ninh on Aug. 4, 2008 and his episcopal ordination was on Oct. 7 the same year.
Bishop Dat serves as Secretary General of the Vietnam Bishops' Conference. He speaks English, French and Latin, except his native language.
