History

Pune is also known as Poona. It was made into a Vicariate Apostolic from Bombay archdiocese on March 8, 1854. A large part of the adjoining areas of Pune was under the archdiocese until new dioceses were created one after the other.

Climate

Climate is pleasant with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius in summer. Winters are not usually cold.

Topography

The diocese is spread over 49, 678 square kilometers covering the civil districts of Pune, Sangli, Satara and Solapur and the parish of Kolhapur. It is an educational hub and a number of languages, including foreign ones, are used. The main languages spoken at English, Hindi, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil.
