Major Archbishop Mar George Alencherry was born on April 19, 1945, in Thuruthy village in Kottayam district in Kerala state. He was ordained priest on Dec. 18, 1972. Archbishop Alencherry was appointed the first bishop of Thuckalay on Dec. 18, 1996, and episcopally ordained on Feb. 2, 1997. At the time of his episcopal appointment, he was the protosyncellus (vicar general) of the archdiocese of Changanacherry.
Archbishop Alencherry is the current president of KCBC (Kerala Catholic Bishop's Council), which consists of Latin rite and Malankara rite prelates, along with the Syro-Malabar rite.
On Dec. 7, 2023, Pope Francis accepted Cardinal Alencherry's resignation from his position as the Major Archbishop of the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.
