The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Jose R. Rojas Jr., D.D. was born on Aug. 18, 1956, in Cebu City. He was ordained a priest on March 29, 1981, and was appointed auxiliary bishop of Caceres on July 25, 2005. His episcopal ordination was on Sept. 15, 2005. On May 19, 2008, he was appointed prelate of Libmanan. He was installed prelate of Libmanan on July 2, 2008. On March 25, 2009, he was installed Bishop of Libmanan after the Territorial Prelature of Libmanan was elevated to a diocese on the same day.
Bishop Jose holds a Bachelor's degree of Sacred Theology from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila (1980) and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the same university (1982). The bishop holds further a Ph. D. in Religious Studies and a doctorate in Sacred Theology both from the Katholeke Universiteit Leuven (1987).
