Some 300 people including Christian clergy, a coalition of media and civil organizations demonstrated yesterday to urge the government to find a journalist who disappeared 500 days ago. Prageeth Eknaligoda, a political columnist and cartoonist with Lanka-e-news website and a freelance journalist who was known for his anti-government news and cartoons went missing on January 24, 2010, just days before the presidential election. He was believed to be a supporter of the common opposition presidential candidate. “Ekneligoda was a journalist who stood for building justice and democracy in the country,” said Anglican Father Marimuthupillai Sathivel, standing among the demonstrators. In Sri Lanka, 14 journalists including Christians have been murdered within the past two decades, 12 of them in the past five years. Some journalists have left the country. Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
