The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Basil Cho Kyu-man was born on June 8, 1955, in Busan. He was ordained priest on Aug. 26, 1982, and was appointed auxiliary bishop of Seoul on Jan. 3, 2006. His episcopal ordination was on Jan. 25, 2006.

Bishop Basil Cho is episcopal vicar for West Seoul and the youth apostolate of the archdiocese. He is president of the Committee for the Doctrine of the Faith and is a member of the Episcopal Commission for Clergy and Religious and the Episcopal Commission for Doctrine of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea (CBCK).

On March 31, 2016, the Holy Father appointed him as the new bishop of Wonju.
