An Indian artist has recreated the Way to Calvary all on canvas. The series by artist Philip V D’Mello titled “Reflections” on the suffering of Christ is being exhibited at the Orchid Art Gallery in Mangalore during Holy Week. The Triumphant March, Sorrowful Mother, The Crucifixion, The Agony in the Garden, The Coronation are some of the scenes portrayed in the exposition. A renowned Christian artist from Vasai in the central Indian state of Mumbai, D'Mello has drawn 15 artworks on paper with ink, while 10 are in watercolor, vividly portraying the passion on canvas. Popularly known as “Vasaivala,” D’Mello said he was inspired by Mel Gibson’s film Passion of the Christ. “The ever reassuring face of Christ and his divine persona is hidden behind each of these pictures drawn in Indian black ink,” said the 60-year-old artist. “I have given art form to ten Stations of the Cross,” he said of the watercolors. The 10 watercolors depict in great detail the final journey of Christ. The subdued hues used in the works bring out the somber mood of the surroundings. “These are portraits of the suffering Christ in different moods. They are a few lines to communicate extensive messages,” said William Pais the owner of the art gallery. “There is a deep spiritual message in every art piece provided we are able to see and read it,” said Louis Pinto who attended the exhibition. “There are unseen lines between the lines that are shown in the picture. This is a unique way to celebrate the Holy week,” said Stephen, a photographer. D’Mello has given a number of solo shows across the country as well as in Germany and Switzerland.
