Paul Simick was appointed as the new Apostolic Vicar of Nepal on April 26.
He was parish priest of the cathedral parish of the Indian diocese of Darjeeling at the time of appointment.
Father Simick replaces 76-year old Jesuit Bishop Anthony Francis Sharma, who has retired.
Father Simick was born on August 7, 1963, in Gitdubling in the diocese of Darjeeling. He studied philosophy and theology at the Morning Star Regional Seminary at Barrackpore in Kolkata. He holds a Masters in English, and a Licentiate and Doctorate in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome.
After his priestly ordination on April 9, 1992, he served as Hostel Prefect of Namchi Public School in Sikkim. From 1993 to1995, he was the Pastor of St. Maurice Parish, Suruk, Darjeeling. On his return from Rome in 2006, he taught scripture at the Barrackpore regional seminary and served in parishes and schools.
From 2006 to 2007, he served as Pastor of Christ the King Parish, Pakyong, East Sikkim. He was the Dean of the East Sikkim Deanery and Treasurer of St. Xavier’s School, Pakyong, from 2007 to 2011.
He held the post of Vice Dean of St. Xavier’s School, Pakyong from 2009 to 2011. Since 2011, he has been the Pastor of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Darjeeling.
