Activists prayed together yesterday in Jakarta during a protest in support of victims of Sunday’s bomb attack on a Protestant church in Solo, Central Java. During the protest outside Bundaran Hotel Indonesia in the city centre, the activists unfurled banners saying: “Stop Hurting Our Own Nation,” “Terrorism is the Enemy of All Nations,” and “Don’t Disturb the Peace in My Indonesia.” “This action is an expression of young people’s concerns over the incident, which has damaged harmony among people from different religious background,” said Addin Jauhari, who heads the Movement of Indonesian Muslims. A suicide bomber blew himself up at the Bethel Injil Sepenuh Church as people were leaving a Sunday morning service. The blast killed the bomber and injured more than 20 people. Police sources believe the bomber was Ahmad Tosepa Hayat, 31, who was one of five people wanted over an April 15 attack on a mosque inside the police compound in Cirebon, West Java. Meanwhile, in Yogyakarta, about 50 young people from the Alliance for Peaceful Indonesia organized a similar event at the Tugu Monument. Dressed in black, they wrapped a black cloth around the monument before holding a candlelit vigil for the bomb victims. “The attack was an act which cannot be justified by any religion or belief. It was truly inhumane,” Subkhi Ridho, who coordinated the event, said. The alliance also called on people not to be easily provoked or to take actions that are against the law. Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
