Filipino activists celebrate Earth Day last year

A Catholic bishop called on President Benigno Aquino III today to postpone this year’s Earth Day celebrations because the day falls on Good Friday.

“The Church is busy during Holy Week and its observance is more important,” said Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo, who is chairman of the social action secretariat of the Catholic bishops’ conference.

He said Earth Day cannot be celebrated on April 22, Good Friday, because it is a “holy day” for Catholics and suggested it be moved  to another date because most people are reflecting and doing sacrifices on Good Friday.

An environmentalist group agreed with Bishop Pabillo as it announced the holding of Earth Day activities a week ahead in deference to the observance of Good Friday.

Kalikasan (Nature) People’s Network for the Environment said a series of Earth Day activities such as seminars, parades and contests will be held starting tomorrow. On April 26 the group proposes  to mark “Global Day of Action” against nuclear reactors and power plants.

I agree with the Bishop, theologically these two have nothing to do with one another, Good Friday is a “holy day” and a “holy observance” for the whole church and all christians. One which should be of upmost importance, because it is about The Lord’s passion, crucifixion and death.
the other is a secular and political celebration, whilst the care for God’s earth and creation is good and important, it should not detract us from reflecting and focusing on the cross of the Lord, for our sins and of the whole world. With his sacrifice and death he saved and redeemed us from the wages of sin, which is death. We should not let what ever paganism that is obviously creeping into the church, lead us away of what is still theologically correct and good with in our church traditions and rituals with which the Roman Catholic Church continues to lead it’s people and showing us the way of the Lord. Reflecting on that and uniting what little or more sacrifice we can do for the sake of his powerful passion. We should always remember that after good friday, then comes “Sunday of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ! Aleluya, Aleluya, Aleluya!! Keep up the Faith, do not let all this secularisms and paganism take away from our faith and love of God the Father for whom we live, let us be the good stewards that the Lord expects us to be. Amen!
