Church bells ring to 'wake up' Hong Kong September 04, 2019

Christian churches rang their bells in unison on Sunday to pray for a peaceful resolution to the crisis engulfing Hong Kong.

Some 40 Catholic and other Christian churches rang their bells at 1pm amid continuing clashes between pro-democracy protesters and police.

Organizers said the bell ringing was a peaceful way to “help wake people up.”

Some churches used a singing bowl instead of bells.

Many congregations sang " Sing Hallelujah to the Lord" during the ceremonies. The song has become linked to the current pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

St. Thomas Church rang its bells to the melody "Christus Vincit" which means “Christ is victorious.”
