In the lead up to the Olympic Games in Rio, Pope Francis has released a short video about how sports can contribute to peace in the world.

"Sports make it possible to build a culture of encounter among everyone for a world of peace," Pope Francis said in the video released Aug. 2.

"I dream of sports as the practice of human dignity, turned into a vehicle of fraternity," the pope said.

"Do we exercise together this prayer intention? That sports may be an opportunity for friendly encounters between people and may contribute to peace in the world."

The video message is the pope's universal prayer intentions for August.

The Rio Olympics begins with its opening ceremony on Aug. 6.
