Amid a record-breaking surge in coronavirus cases, United Christian Hospital (UCH) in Lahore is going through a renaissance.
Once the only air-conditioned hospital in Pakistan, it has been without a general surgeon for more than a decade, with visiting doctors only available on the day shift.
By next week, however, it will have renovated a consultant’s room and an outpatient department with shiny benches. The facility plans to start admissions for a four-year bachelor’s of science degree in nursing in October. A Christian attorney is donating salaries for two visiting doctors.
Pastor Sajid Saraj, coordinator of Friends of UCH, a team of 50 volunteers, hopes to revive the glory of the 216-bed facility where the first open-heart surgery in Pakistan was performed in 1968. Besides donating a mattress sewing machine, the group has already renovated two wards.
