Dancing is a passion for Sheuli Akter (not her real name), but she never thought her dancing skills would invite the biggest disaster in her life.  

Born and raised in a poor Muslim family at a village in Mymensingh district in northeast Bangladesh, Sheuli’s father, a low-paid primary school teacher, struggled to support the family of five.

Sheuli, the eldest of three siblings, studied up to grade 12 and during that time learned professional dancing. At the age of 20, she fell in love with a young man and married him against the will of her parents.

“Together we earned enough to have a good family life but our happy days didn’t last long,” Sheuli, now 23, told ucanews.
