Construction workers have unearthed a 173-year-old time capsule in Singapore's oldest Catholic church.

The time capsule was found underneath the foundation stone of the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd during renovations, reported The Straits Times.

Among the items left inside the shoebox-sized capsule were a prayer booklet and newspapers from 1843 plus a range of 18th-and 19th-century coins.

Cathedral rector, Msgr. Philip Heng, told The Straits Times that the discovery demonstrates that Singapore's first Catholics anticipated the community's longevity.

"The founders realized that, one day, someone was going to be digging and would see that they had anticipated and had hope that the Catholic community would still be in existence in Singapore centuries later," Msgr. Heng said.

Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
