Thai transgender people welcome landmark moves

Thailand’s transgender people have long enjoyed freedoms unavailable to their peers in neighboring countries, yet they still have a long way to go to achieve full equality with biological women.

In recent weeks, however, some Thai transwomen have been granted further dispensations that will help them feel more accepted in various areas of life previously limited to them.

In a landmark move, Bangkok’s Thammasat University, one of Thailand’s most prestigious educational institutions, has issued a formal announcement allowing transgender students to dress in accordance with their chosen gender at graduation ceremonies.

“I didn’t expect [the decision] to come in time for my graduation,” a student who was born male but identifies as female told a Thai newspaper.
