Khateeb Hussain, a third-year student who made headlines in 2019 for stabbing his college professor to death, was sentenced to death in Pakistan on Jan. 16.
An anti-terrorism court in Bahawalpur, Punjab province, also sentenced his accomplice and class fellow to seven years in prison because he provoked Hussain against Khalid Hameed, a lecturer in English at Government Sadiq Egerton College.
On March 20, 2019, the 21-year-old bachelor of science student attacked and inflicted serious injuries with a knife on his professor in a small office next to the English department staff room over reservations about a farewell party where male and female students were supposed to perform a jhoomar, a folk dance that the student considered offensive to Islam.
