Pope Francis on June 28 appointed a new bishop for Diocese in Indonesia, Vatican Radio reported.

Carmelite Father Henricus Pidyarto Gunawan, rector of the Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute Widya Sasana in Malang takes over from 77-year-old Carmelite Bishop Herman Joseph Sahadat Pandoyoputro, who has retired.

Father Gunawan, 61, was born in Malang and took his final vows in the Order of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in 1981. He was ordained to the priesthood the following year in Malang. Sent to Rome for higher studies, he obtained a licentiate in Sacred Scriptures in 1986 from the Jesuit-run Pontifical Biblical Institute, and received a doctorate in Biblical Theology in 1990 from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, also known as the Angelicum.

Since 2012, he has served as rector of Malang's Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute, the same seminary he studied in to become a priest.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
