A man transporting cattle has been killed by 'cow vigilantes' on Aug. 17 in southwestern India reports The Hindu.
Praveen Poojary, 29, died in hospital after he and another man were beaten by a mob from the right-wing group Hindu Jagrana Vedike because they were transporting three cows in their vehicle near Hebri town in the state of Karnataka. Poojary was reportedly also a local member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The members of the Hindu Jagrana Vedike alleged that the two men were taking the cattle to the abattoir.
Police have arrested 17 men over the incident, which is similar to a string of attacks across the country.
Last September, a Muslim man in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was killed on suspicion that he had eaten and stored beef in his house. The incident led to a national outrage and an investigation later proved the meat was lamb.
Cows are considered holy by orthodox Hindus and their slaughter is banned in several Indian states.
