The Philippines' most prominent liturgist died yesterday a few weeks before he was due to receive a prestigious award from the Vatican.

Anscar Chupungco died from a heart attack aged 73 in the southern province of Bukidnon.

He was due to officially receive the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice – the cross of honor – on January 26 in addition to the domestic Jorge Barlin Golden Cross Award also due to be awarded in the coming weeks.

He served as consulter in the Sacred Congregations of the Divine Worship and the Sacraments of the Vatican and has lectured to bishops’ conferences and clergies in the US, Africa, Asia and Europe.
