Letter from Rome: Not fit for purpose

Religion News Service recently published an excellent article by Claire Giangravé that focused on the pope's "gamble" to decentralize authority by implementing synodality throughout the Church.

But this was one of the lines that especially grabbed my attention: "Reforming seminaries is essential to promote the formation of clergy capable of overcoming differences and finding common ground, according to McCallum."

McCallum would be David McCallum, a Jesuit priest who recently became executive director of the Program for Discerning Leadership at the Gregorian University here in Rome.

One of the reasons McCallum's observation on the need to reform seminaries caught my eye is because of my own experience in priestly formation more than three decades ago.
