The European Parliament has adopted a resolution expressing “grave concern at incidents of violence against religious minorities” in Indonesia. Meanwhile, 38 MPs have signed a similar resolution in the UK Parliament, a letter of concern has been signed by members of the US Congress and the Swedish parliament has highlighted such attacks. The European Parliament resolution specifies minorities facing attacks as Ahmadi Muslims, Christians, Baha’ís and Buddhists. It also calls for the repeal or revision of Indonesia’s blasphemy, heresy and religious defamation by-laws, which it says are “open to misuse,” and expresses concern at a 2008 decree prohibiting the dissemination of Ahmadiyya Muslim teachings. The resolution applauds the work of civil society groups in Indonesia and pledges support for those “actively promoting democracy, tolerance and peaceful co-existence between different ethnic and religious groups.”
