Korean Catholics prayed for peace as icy relations between North and South Korea became even colder last week when the Kim regime test launched a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile mere months after the South deployed the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.
A special Mass was held on Aug. 29 at Myeongdong Cathedral where about 800 people joined to pray for a warming in relations in the divided peninsula. Various church groups attended the service, which was presided over by Bishop Peter Lee Ki-hun of Uijeongbu, president of the Bishops’ Committee for the Reconciliation of the Korean People.
"Even more than 60 years after the war, the two Koreas have not forgiven each other," said Bishop Lee in his homily. "The path to the national reconciliation seems to be far away. I hope the two Koreas meet and seek to overcome this deepening hatred."
Bishop Lee spoke out against the deployment of THAAD. "It is a pitiful decision considering the economic effect and expected arms race with China and Russia," he said.
