Indonesian Bishop Henrisoesanta of Tanjungkarang dies

Late prelate was recalled for uniting people of different religious backgrounds

Retired Indonesian Bishop Andreas Henrisoesanta of Tanjungkarang died March 10, about a month after he celebrated his 40th anniversary of his episcopal ordination. He was 80

He had been hospitalized in St. Carolus Hospital in Jakarta since Feb. 20 for respiratory problems.

A requiem Mass was celebrated late March 10 in Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral in Jakarta. The next day, the bishop’s body was transported to Tanjungkarang where a funeral Mass will be celebrated March 13 in Christ the King Cathedral followed by burial in the Catholic Cemetery of Negeri Sakti in Pesawaran. 

Bishop Henrisoesanta was ordained a priest of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart on July 2, 1961. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Tanjungkarang on Aug. 29, 1975, and was named bishop of the diocese four years later. He retired on July 6, 2012.

Sacred Heart Father Donatus Kusmartono, the order’s superior, said Bishop Henrisoesanta united people from different religious backgrounds.

"He didn't like exclusive groups. He lived a life uniting all people from different religious backgrounds," he said.
