Nine activists with the environmental advocacy group Greenpeace rappelled down the 17-story twin towers of the Procter & Gamble headquarters in downtown Cincinnati today (March 4) and unfurled two enormous banners to protest deforestation linked to palm oil.

One of the 60-foot banners read: “Head and Shoulders wipes out dandruff and rain forests.”

The other read: “Head & Shoulders: Stop putting tiger survival on the line.”

“Today's protest at our general offices ended peacefully, and our primary concerns were the safety of our employees, the security of our facilities and the safety of the protesters,” P&G spokesman Paul Fox told me. “Today's protest is now in the hands of local law enforcement."

Greenpeace claims that palm oil used in P&G brands such as Head & Shoulders shampoo, Gillette shaving gel and Olay skin care products is connected to the deforestation of an area of Indonesia that is home to endangered Sumatran orangutans and tigers. A Greenpeace spokeswoman said she didn't know how the activists got into the building, but said they rappelled from a balcony near the summit around 12:30 p.m.

The banners were strung on wires between the two towers by the climbers, one of whom was wearing a tiger costume.

Clearing rainforests to cultivate palm trees is not only pushing the animals closer to extinction but also speeding climate change, Greenpeace claims. The group wants Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG) to suspend trade with any producer involved in deforestation.

The environmental advocacy group launched a public relations campaign last week against Procter & Gamble, which for at least 15 years has touted its commitment to consider the environmental impact of the household products it manufactures and sells worldwide.
