The Jakarta-based Foundation of Atma Jaya has introduced a new award to honor a late Catholic politician who “contributed much to both the nation and the Church.” “The Frans Seda Award will be given to young people or institutions that effectively promote education development and humanity without discrimination,” said Slamet Effendy Yusuf, who heads the award committee. He was speaking at the launch of the award on Wednesday at the Catholic University of Atma Jaya in Jakarta. The Muslim layman, who also heads the Nahdlatul Ulama, said the emphasis on education and humanity were chosen because Frans Seda paid great attention to these areas. He said nominations for the first award have already started and will close in September. The winner will be announced next year and will receive 50 million rupiah (about US$5,882) as well as a medallion and a certificate. Former government minister Emil Salim praised the foundation for introducing the award. “It offers encouragement to young people,” the Muslim leader said. Speaking about Frans Seda, he said: “The bottom line with Frans Seda is that he lived for both the nation and the Church.” Franciscus Xaverius Seda, popularly known as Frans Seda, served as plantation minister from 1964 to 1966, agriculture minister in 1966, finance minister from 1966 to 1968 and transport minister from 1968 to 1973. He died on December 31, 2009, at the age of 83. Related report Australian grant to honor Indonesian minister IJ14383
