At least one person was killed and more than 350 families badly affected by flash floods in Mindanao, disaster management officials said yesterday. One man reportedly drowned in Glan, in Sarangani province, while many other areas in the province and in nearby Cotabato were under water following several days of heavy rain, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). At least 300 families are feared trapped in their homes while more than 30 have been evacuated to safer ground around Kidapawan. The Red Cross and the NDRRMC say they have already launched operations to rescue the trapped families and are warning of possible landslides. NDRRMC chief, Benito Ramos, also said the rains are expected to raise water levels in rivers in several provinces of Mindanao. He said he has directed disaster management officials to undertake precautionary measures and monitor the situation.
