A Filipino Dominican friar is set to head the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome, better known as the Angelicum.

Father Rolando de la Rosa, OP, former rector of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, will become the Angelicum's first Asian rector.

"He will assume his new office on the Sept. 1 2016. Thanks be to God!" read a post on the Facebook page of the Order of Preachers.

Father De la Rosa will serve as Rector Magnificus of the Angelicum for four years until 2020.

He served as rector of UST for three terms in 1990 to 1998 and 2008 to 2012. He is currently the dean of the Faculty of Sacred Theology at UST.

Father De la Rosa was chairman of the Commission on Higher Education in the Philippines from 2004 to 2005.
