An environmental activist was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman in the province of Bukidnon on Wednesday, according to the Kalikasan People's Network for the Environment. Margarito Cabal was a leader of Task Force Save Pulangi, which has campaigned against the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Pulangi River, Kalikasan said in a statement on Friday. Environmental activists have said the construction of the dam would threaten the integrity of the ecosystem and displace indigenous communities along the river. "We strongly condemn the killing of Cabal, an environmental activist who consistently fought for the rights of the community over their water resources," said Clemente Bautista, national coordinator for Kalikasan. Bautista said Cabal is the 13th environmentalist killed in the Philippines in the past two years.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
