A major earthquake struck Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province on Sumatra Island on Tuesday, killing an 11-year-old girl, leaving 10 injured, and damaging dozens of buildings.
The 6.0-magnitude quake struck at 5:22 am. The epicenter was located about 15 kilometers southwest of the province’s capital, Banda Aceh, at a depth of 84 kilometers, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency,
A 5.1-magnitude aftershock followed 25 minutes later.
Three sub-districts in Pidie district – Tangse, Mane and Geumpang – were affected by the quake.
Apriadi, head of the district’s Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, said the girl who was killed was from Mane Cot village. She was found dead in her collapsed house.
“For sure, many houses are damaged. However, no one has had to leave their homes. Those whose houses are damaged are now cleaning up,” he told KOMPAS.com.
