A major earthquake struck Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province on Sumatra Island on Tuesday, killing an 11-year-old girl, leaving 10 injured, and damaging dozens of buildings.

The 6.0-magnitude quake struck at 5:22 am. The epicenter was located about 15 kilometers southwest of the province’s capital, Banda Aceh, at a depth of 84 kilometers, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency,

A 5.1-magnitude aftershock followed 25 minutes later.

Three sub-districts in Pidie district – Tangse, Mane and Geumpang – were affected by the quake.

Apriadi, head of the district’s Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, said the girl who was killed was from Mane Cot village. She was found dead in her collapsed house.

“For sure, many houses are damaged. However, no one has had to leave their homes. Those whose houses are damaged are now cleaning up,” he told KOMPAS.com.

Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
