Since early December, some medical facilities in the Chinese industrial port city of Wuhan have nursed patients with pneumonia of unknown causes. Wuhan medical facilities then carried out surveillance on hundreds of influenza-related diseases and established them to be viral pneumonia.
On Jan. 20, Zhong Nanshan, an official of the National Health Commission, announced the detection of human-to-human transmission of the new coronavirus. That was about a month after the first case was treated in the hospital.
Within one month, the virus spread rapidly. Although it was said that the virus was not as severe as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) of 2002-03, the authorities’ approach has worsened the situation.
