Rights bodies have urged the Sri Lankan government to ensure better ethnic and religious representation on decision-making bodies in the Buddhist-majority nation.

The government recently appointed ad-hoc bodies to deal with issues of governance. One is the Presidential Task Force for Archaeological Heritage Management in the Eastern Province. This comprises high-level security forces personnel and a few others who will be tasked with dealing with complex issues of history, identity and land use.

The National Peace Council (NPC), an independent and non-partisan organization that works toward a negotiated political solution to the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, says the task force has no minority representation even though the Eastern Province has a population that is more than 75 percent Tamil and Muslim.
