Vietnamese boat people struggle to eke out a living

Many groups of marginalized people who have no land for erecting shelters have had to live on small boats on rivers and lagoons for generations in Thua Thien Hue Province, central Vietnam.

They sail boats daily along rivers to catch fish and shellfish, use tricycles to transport people and goods, and work as irregular wage earners for a living.

They face a polluted environment and live far away from resident areas. They live in extreme poverty and big families and do all daily activities in boats.

Their children have no place to play, are illiterate or drop out of school early to work to support their families.
