Thais turn to spirits for good fortune

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country where age-old animistic beliefs continue to hold sway. People from all walks of life place trust in placating spirits with votive offerings, wearing magical amulets for protection against ill fortune, and heeding the advice of self-proclaimed holy men.

Seeking to divine winning lottery numbers through a variety of ways with the aid of the supernatural is especially popular. Some secularists decry such beliefs as atavistic, but most Thais don’t see anything wrong with them.
