In northern Bangladesh, Catholicism has spread among ethnic indigenous communities including the Santal, Oraon, Munda and Paharia since the 17th century thanks to the evangelization of Spanish Carmelite missionaries and Italian PIME missionaries. Many indigenous people have received education and training, but many remain poor and marginalized.
