Silver jubilee celebrations for Nepalese cathedral

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu is marking its silver jubilee year.

The cathedral was built in 1995 and was blessed by Cardinal Josef Tomko then prefect of the Propaganda Fide.

It is also commonly known locally as the Church of the Our Lady of the Assumption.

Celebrations began on Aug. 17, two days after the feast of the Assumption. More celebrations are planed to go on till next year.

During the Mass homily Bishop Paul Simick said the jubilee year is a divine call for everyone to practice freedom, forgiveness, and solidarity.

"A jubilee is not only for celebration, but it is an important time for us to be renewed and return to the Lord," he said.

There are estimated to be more than 10,000 Catholics in Nepal.
