Rohingya refugees get on with life in Bangladesh

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates that about 723,000 ethnic Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since August 2017 to escape a deadly military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine State in response to attacks on security forces by Rohingya militants.

Denied citizenship and basic human rights in Myanmar, Rohingya have trickled into Bangladesh since 1970 due to persecution by Myanmar's successive military governments and radical Rakhine Buddhists. However, the exodus following the brutal atrocities last year was the fastest and largest in scale, triggering a massive humanitarian emergency.

On Sept. 2, ucanews.com documented the lives of Rohingya in Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, where more than 400,000 Rohingya reside one year after the exodus.
