Rights demand dominates Bangladesh's World’s Indigenous Peoples Day

The United Nations has been celebrating the International Day of Indigenous Peoples since 1995. This year it was celebrated in Bangladesh with the theme: "Role of indigenous women in preservation and development of traditional knowledge". Bangladesh’s indigenous people marked the day by demanding constitutional recognition of and ensuring their human rights and the formation of a separate land commission to solve land problems.  According to a new census, the indigenous minority population stands at 1,650,159, but indigenous leaders say the figure stands at more than 3,000,000.
