Ramadan in India's Jammu and Kashmir

For Jammu and Kashmir India’s only Muslim majority state, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar is viewed as one of the most sacred of months.

The last 10 days of this month in particular are celebrated with gaiety as all the important days like Jumat ul-Vida, the last Friday of Ramadan and Shab-e-Qadr, the night when Muslims believe the Quran was revealed to Muhammad, fall during it.

Markets in this otherwise conflict ridden region wear a festive look. Dates imported from different parts of the world are widely consumed during iftar when fasting is broken at sunset .

Special prayers are also held during this month seeking the end of conflict and the return of peace to the region.

Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting. It lasts 29 to 30 days, from one visual sighting of the crescent moon to the next in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar.
