Massive landslide buries remote Papua New Guinea villages

The massive landslide that hit Papua New Guinea's Yambali village buried an estimated 2,000 people on May 24, according to government estimates.

Only nine bodies have been recovered so far, and military officials estimate the death toll to be around 650.

An estimated 7,849 villagers near Mount Mungalo in central Papua New Guinea were not prepared for the landslide that buried families and their homes in the early hours of May 24.

Aid efforts have been severely hampered by the site's remote location, nearby tribal violence, and landslide damage that has severed major road links.
