Lenten gathering unites Protestants and Catholics in Bangladesh

For about 127 years, a spiritual and thanksgiving program during the holy season of Lent has been attracting thousands of Protestants and Catholics. 'Blessed Wednesday” is organized by the Protestant Church of Bangladesh in Kushtia district and features prayers, preaching, charismatic healing and devotional music. About 6,000 attended the two-day event at St. Thomas Church of Kushtia Diocese.

The program commemorates a legend of 1894 in undivided India when Christians in the Moliapota area of Nadia district (now covered by West Bengal state of India) struggled for survival amid a cholera epidemic. As dozens died, Christians closed their houses (Tuesday-Wednesday) and prayed to God, which saw the epidemic stopped. Thankful Christians have held the thanksgiving program ever since.
