Japan sees reduced festivities after Halloween ban

Shibuya, one of Japan's liveliest destinations for Halloween celebrations saw reduced crowds and festivities this year.

The local administration had requested partygoers to stay away from the area fearing a crowd crush similar to the one that occurred in Itaewon, South Korea in 2022.

In addition to a "Don't Visit" campaign, the administration banned public drinking in the area days before Halloween, and the district's 35 local stores were told to stop selling alcohol.

The administration also put up large hoardings near the stations informing the public that events were not allowed in the streets.

As a result of the campaign, the number of visitors to the area was reduced.

However, the Halloween spirit was high in the air in Shibuya and other locations in Japan.
