Indonesians run to raise money for churches

Over 3,500 people, mostly Catholics, joined the "Run4U" charity run organized in the Indonesian city of Tangerang on July 29.

Held under the theme "Unity in Diversity", the run started at 6 a.m. and consisted of a 2.5 km walk and a 5 km run. Participants included priests, nuns, seminarians, elderly, young and people from other religions.

The event was organised by two groups from the Jakarta Archdiocese — the Catholic Businessmen and Professionals (PUKAT) and the Archdiocesan Ministry Council for Catholic Charismatic Renewal (BPK PKK).

Money raised from the day will help with the construction of two churches — St. Leo the Great parish's church in Jatiwaringin of East Jakarta and a chapel at St. Aloysius Gonzaga parish in Pamakayo in East Nusa Tenggara province. Funds will also be used to build a pastoral building at St. Nicodemus parish in Ciputat of South Tangerang. Some of the funds will also be used to finance a youth formation run by the BPK PKK.

Tangerang is in Banten province located some 25 kilometers from Jakarta.

The Jakarta Archdiocese declared 2018 as the "Year of Unity."
