Hong Kong commemorates Tiananmen massacre

More than 180,000 people commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre at a candlelight vigil in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park.

The gathering on June 4 was the largest since the 2014 Umbrella Movement but police claim there were only 37,000 people. The 180,000 figure was an estimate from the event’s organizers, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.

Hong Kong is the only place in China allowed to commemorate the massacre.

People filled the park plus neighboring roads to remember the bloody crackdown against the pro-democracy student-led movement in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.
