Hmong Catholics endure suffering and deprivation

Thousands of ethnic Hmong Catholics from Giang La Pan parish in the mountainous province of Yen Bai, northwestern Vietnam, struggle daily by having to deal with a lack of power, water, education, healthcare, roads and other amenities and services other people take for granted.

They have to take water from mountains, use flashlights and cellphones for light at night, and carry goods on their shoulders or by scooters along rough paths winding up and down hills and mountains.

Children leave for and from school early as schools are often 20-50 kilometers away from their villages.

They grow crops for a living and have lived in acute poverty for generations. They remain faithful to practicing the Catholic faith the way their ancestors were taught by foreign missionaries 80 years ago.

Giang La Pan Church offers free power produced by a generator charge flashlights and cell phones.
