Filipinos welcome Chinese New Year

Filipinos mark the start of this year's Chinese New Year — the year of the dog — on Feb. 16 with feasts, parties, dressing up, and street parades.

Chinese Filipinos are one of the largest overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. There are approximately 1.5 million Filipinos with pure Chinese ancestry, or around 1.8 percent of the population.

In addition, Sangleys — Filipinos with at least some Chinese ancestry — comprise a substantial minority of the Philippine population, although the actual figures are not known.

Chinese Filipinos are a well established middle class ethnic group and are well represented in all levels of Philippine society. They play a leading role in the Philippines' business sector.
