Filipinos protest State of the Nation

An array of people from various sectors marched together despite the threat of rain on a highway leading to the House of Representatives in Manila on July 23 to dramatize their protest against what they described as the Philippines real state of the nation.

The protest march and demonstration that lasted until late in the afternoon was held a few kilometers from the legislative building where President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his State of the Nation Address, the third since he came to power in 2016.

As of five o'clock in the afternoon, authorities estimated the protesters to number to about 8,000 people. A gathering of the president's supporters nearby was estimated to have reached about 7,000.

The protesters, who dubbed the protest march and demonstration as "United People's State of the Nation Address" laughed off the police figures.

The protesters came from various groups of women, students, tribal people, farmers, workers, urban poor communities, religious groups, business and academic sectors.
