Filipino Muslims mark 'Feast of the Sacrifice'

Filipino Muslims mark Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice), the second most important holiday in the Muslim world, on Aug. 21 with prayers and the slaughter of goats and cows and their meat given to the poor.

Thousands of men, women, and children gather outside the Blue Mosque in the suburban city of Taguig, east of the Philippine capital Manila, as early as before sunrise.

Some families stay in their homes or compounds where they can pray together then share food and stories the whole day.

The "Feast of the Sacrifice," also called the "Festival of Sacrifice," is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated around the world each year. It commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow God's command to sacrifice his son.
