Chinese New Year in the Philippines

Chinese New Year, or the Lunar New Year, is one of the most important festivals not only for the Chinese community in the Philippines but also for the predominantly Catholic Filipinos.

In the streets of the country's Chinatowns, festivities are held with parades and dragon dances to welcome the new year with the hope of attracting prosperity, closer family ties and peace.

Filipinos visit temples and Catholic churches to pray for a better year in terms of health and wealth.

Chinese communities existed in the Philippines since the early years of the Spanish colonization that dates back from the 16th century.

Chinese communities grew due to intermarriage among Filipino natives. As the population grew, so did the grandeur of the Chinese New Year celebration.
